Should Athletes Diet?

Teen athletes have very unique nutritional needs. Because athletes workout various times a day for a good period of time, they generally need to eat extra calories to fuel both their performance and their growth. Depending on how active they are, they can ingest anywhere from 2,000 - 5,000 calories. If an athletes does not eat enough calories in a day, they are less likely to reach their peak performance and may break down their muscle mass instead of building them up.
QUESTION: Since athletes require more calories to reach their peak performance, is it a good idea for athletes to diet?

I think athletes should diet because they need nutrients because they are constantly working out so yes i think they should have a healthy diet.

I don't think it is ok for athletes to diet but eat healthy instead they need the nutrients from the food instead of dieting.

I don't believe it is right for athletes to diet. If you eat healthy foods and not too much sugar, and eat the right foods before and after a game and/or practice... the calorie count you need should be just right. I am a crazy, all around athlete, I eat what I want with the exception of not eating a few things. I am fine during and off of the sports season.

Okay, so i think that as long as you are working the food you eat off in a healthy way you should be fine. There is no reason to take away the things your body needs! =] SO EAT!

I personally think that athletes should not diet at all. There are some few excpections that include wrestling and just other specific cases. I don't think it is healthly if you are going to be active a lot to not eat a balanced diet. If you do not have enough energy to burn off during a vigorous excercise, you will not be able to preform to your full ability.

I think that it is a bad idea for the athleats to diet because they do require so many more calories than normal, that if they did not intake enough that that it could be a risk to there health and so they wouldn't be a benifit to anybody, so I think that an athelte should even eat more than the average person because they will work it off.

I think that it makes no difference to diet if you are an athlete or not, its up to you.

I think that it depends on what an athlete considers a diet. some people think that going on a diet means eating nothing but salads and drinking nothing but water at all times. others think going on a diet is just being more aware of what you are eating and being a little more careful. athletes do burn a lot of calories, and they need their bodies to be strong. therefore, i think athletes should just watch what they are eating rather than completely minimize it.

All teen athletes need to respect their bodies. If you are working out for any period of time, you will burn extra calories. You have to replenish these calories. I don't believe it's a great idea for athletes to diet because they won't ever have the energy they need to be physically active. If you are trying to lose weight or get into better shape, you should just eat healthier.

I think that it is your opption if you want to diet or not. I don't think that they should take in more callories than they need to in a day even if you are an athlete or not.

I really think athletes shouldn't diet but eat healthy. Athletes need more nutrients because they work harder than teh average kid. Though, they need to show that in a healthy way.

I think that dieting to a cretin point is necessary for an athlete. However I also believe that a high school athlete’s body is still naturally telling its self how much to eat and when to do it. I think that making sure they are getting the proper nutrients every day should be their only concern.

Diet simply means the food that you put in your body. As an athlete it isn't a good idea to reduce the amount of calories you intake, which is obvious. But they do need to be conscious of the foods they are consuming. Just because they can take in a higher number of calories each day doesn't mean that they can eat junk food. They still need to be mindful of the Food Guide Pyramid and make sure that they are getting those daily requirements, plus replenishing carbohydrates and proteins they are burning up so quickly. Things like food intake need to be explained to student-athletes so that they are not hurting themselves.

When talking about diet it is very important to clarify specifically what you mean by the word diet. If you simply mean consuming a proper diet as your definition of diets then I think it is important for student athletes to diet. However, when most people see the word diet they think of cutting calories and sometimes important nutrients. When student athletes are in season they are burning so many calories that it is not important for them to diet. In fact it is not safe for them to diet. More times than not they will start skipping meals and their body will not be able to recover to its full potential. Student athletes need to make an important decision of either looking good or playing good.
