Access to Alcohol

More than 40% of teens who admitted drinking said they drink when they are upset; 31% said they drink alone; 25% said they drink when they are bored; and 25% said they drink to "get high." (U.S. Surgeon General, 1991)
Each year, students spend $5.5 billion on alcohol, more than they spend on soft drinks, tea, milk, juice, coffee or books combined. On a typical campus, per capita students spending for alcohol--$446 per student--far exceeds the per capita budget of the college library. (Eigen, 1991 in the 1998 National Household Survey on Drug Abuse). Source

  • If these numbers are correct and alcohol is supposed to be illegal for those under 21, where are they getting this alcohol?
  • How easily available is alcohol to teens these days?

I believe the reason that people drink are because they know that they aren't suppose to. If parents allowed them to drink, not excessively, at dinner under adult supervision, this would allow them to feel more mature and won't go out and get into trouble while under the influence of drugs. Also it has been proven if drink one glass of wine a day, that it is actually good for you!

I think kids drink cause they can. Parents are stupid, they enjoy "living through" their kids and their youth and they let them do it, because they did. Then the parents expect the consequences to be minimal since they were when they were their age.
Look at this guy

5th DUI, do you think he's learned anything. Nope, he let a unicorn drive his car :)

In all honesty, parents... stop crying about drunk drivers hurting or killing your kids, and at the same time allow your kids to drink (even having knowledge of it.)

I think high schoolers drink to have a sense of rebellion. They like to know they aren't doing the right thing. They like to know they aren't following what their parents say.The public makes parents seem like the bad guys and so high schoolers don't want to obey their parents. They want to have free reign. They also like to know they are getting away with something they aren't supposed to do. This is why I think high schoolers choose to drink.

i think that some highschoolers do have acess to alcohol but you cant blame the parents for all of it. In highschool is where you grow as an individual and mature in life. drinking is their decision and they also have the decision to not. parents can tell you time and time again to not drink but this doesnt stop them from doing it especially if they have acess too it.

I think that it;s easy for teens to access alcohol because of their parents, peers, and siblings that will buy it for them. I dont think a lot of people drink it just because they are bored, especially at the high school age, they do it because their friends do it, and because it instills a sense of "maturity". I'm pretty sure that if more kid's parents said they could drink, they wouldn't because they like keeping things from their parents, and there is no fun in just being able to do it, it's the thrill of hiding it, and not getting caught by police or parents.

I think why teens drink is because they have been through stuff with there family. Theother thing is that if there family members drink that gives them to drink because it is infuince to the teens. They shouldn't have the drinking age go down to 18 because the teens will get in car rekse.

Well, acess is really easy for teens to get. Some familys may supply it for them, or their friends may supply it for them. Sometimes they can even get away with going into bars are buying from a quickway. Alot of the time though they just steal it from their parents, or their friends parents. I think that alot of people drink because they're hoping to find an answer to theyre problems, but all it actually does is create more problems. Some teens do it just because it helps them fit in, or becuase they want to prove to their friends that they can go against their parents. I think that drinking is that persons choice if they want to ruin their life... let them

I belive that alchol is so easy to get their hands on because either theirs friends are older, get fake ids, they get it from their parents when they are not looking, or their parents don't care. I think this is a very bad thing. the kids who are drinking will most likely die at a younger age. I see it all the time. At our family gatherings, they all drink. It can be very scarry to see them drunk!! Even my cousins drink and they are very under age. It is easier for the younger to get alchol casue everyone else is drinking to and they might not even know what the "parents" are agreeing to. I think parents should have more controll over the drinking themselves. If they don't the children think that it is ok themselves to drink. I believe that "kids" should not drink and save themselves from the loss.

Its there choice to drink and they get caught its ther fault so if you drink and get caught its your problem to deal with not your parents.:(

Alcohol has been made out to be such an evil, heinous thing that has been banned for those who are uder the age of 21. For many kids as soon as you tell them they cannot do something, they will find a way to do it. Whether you know about it or not. It's a simple fact of life. Nearly every other industrialized nation has a younger drinking age, and they don't make alcohol seem so taboo or evil. Leading to fewer alcoholics, fewer alcohol related incidents, and less underage drinking. Students who are getting alcohol are getting it from many different places. Their parents home, siblings who are of age, friends who are 21, or getting fake IDs and getting it themselves. I think alcohol is easily available because many parents are in denial that their child would do such a thing.

It is very easy for people under 21 to get alcohol epically if they are in college, because there are so many people on a college campus that will buy it for them because of the experience they had as a minor. High school students can obtain their alcohol from older siblings or steal form parents cabinets, its is not avoidable but if parents talk to their kids and let them know its not acceptable maybe it will have some kind of impact on them.

Teenagers this day in age are very resourceful. If there is something they want bad enough they will usually get it. Most often it is not very difficult when it comes to alcohol. All it takes is an older sibling or a friend of a friend who is older or that has a fake idea that works well enough. In some cases it doesn’t even take that much. Older more mature looking or sounding teens or beautiful looking teen women may not even get carded. In some cases the people carding are so caught up with outward appearances that they won’t even bother to card them. I believe that alcohol is a very accessible drug for teens.
